Welcome to November, which is more than half over. I realize I have ignored my subscribers over the past months. My last column appeared on August 29, almost two months ago. This is not a recommended frequency for building an audience. Rather than simply disappear, I thought I would share what has led to this lapse.
I have published 21 columns since June of 2021. I have more than doubled the amount of free subscribers I started out with. While the total number of subscribers is still rather small I am happy to have increased the size of my list. I must have done something right.
Besides frequency problems, I have been inconsistent with my subject matter, which has been all over the place. My original pitch for this column was “This is my blog, where I write about what interests me, in the hopes that it will also interest you.” That is built on the hope that you will find my thoughts interesting. That’s a long shot. In some cases, I think I did resonate with readers and new subscribers did come along.
I have written about books, music, blues history, and general musings. Again, this is not a calculated way to build an audience. It leads me to wonder: what do you, as a reader, want to see from me? More focus? Music writing? Book reviews? Leave a comment if you have an opinion.
I am working on a column that I plan to publish in the run-up to Christmas. It’s about some of my favorite things I enjoy over the holiday season. After that, I’ll be publishing a column about what I plan to do in the New Year. I will continue with this column but I have some other projects I want to announce as well.
In the meantime, I am not gone. I’m still here. There are always a lot of interesting things to write about. That’s how it is for a writer.
